SUBMISSIONS
$pread is always looking for original writing and artwork by sex workers and others with insight into the sex industry. You don’t have to be an experienced writer or artist
to contribute to the magazine and you don’t have to have a specific opinion on any issue.
We regularly post calls for submissions on our blog and on Myspace, so if you want to write for us but don't know what to write about, check them out or email us for suggestions.
If you plan to submit an article to $pread, please read our Writers' Guidelines (below) carefully, make sure your work fits into a specific section of our magazine, and please please please don't exceed the word limit!
Note that $pread is a magazine, not a journal, and we do not accept academic papers. $pread only publishes previously unpublished articles, but you retain the right re-publish your work elsewhere at a later date and we ask only that you indicate that it was first published in $pread. We reserve the right to edit your work. At this time, $pread is unable to provide monetary compensation to writers or artists.
We accept pitches and submissions on a rolling basis. Due to the volume of submissions, we can’t publish or provide feedback for everything we receive.
Please email us your pitch or submission as a Word document as well as inside the body of your email. You many also send submissions by snail mail to: $pread Magazine, PO Box 305, Cooper Station, New York, NY 10276.
WRITERS' GUIDELINES
Features
2000-3000 words
Features are critical analyses of news, political or cultural commentary, and personal essays. They should be written in a clear, engaging, and non-academic style.
If you have an idea for a feature article, please submit a 200-word pitch describing what you intend to write, and provide a writing sample, if possible. Your writing sample doesn’t need to have been published or be related to sex work.
News Reports
500-1000 words
Reports should cover current sex worker-related news and events from across the globe. If possible, please include photos with your report.
Reviews
400-600 words
$pread publishes reviews of current sex worker-related media, including books, film, theater, television, and art. Please let us know if you plan to submit a review in case someone else is already reviewing it. Current media is a higher priority for publication. If you would like to contribute a review, but don’t know what to cover, please contact us for suggestions.
Creative Writing & Poetry
Less than 2000 words
We receive a lot of creative writing submissions, so this is a competitive category!
Recurring Short Features
Indecent Proposals
500 words
“What’s the funniest or weirdest thing a client has ever asked you to do?” $pread is always looking for sex workers to answer this question for our highly popular, illustrated column.
Scene Report
500 words
Where do you work? Send us a description of your brothel, strip club, massage parlor, peep show, dungeon, or street corner. Tell us about a typical day at work, what you like and dislike about your workplace, and how it compares to other places you’ve worked.
The Cunning Linguist
4-6 terms with definitions of 15-20 words each
In every issue, $pread sheds light on specific terms used by sex workers in a specific area of the industry. Previous examples have included a pro-domme’s definitions for “tribute” and “lifestyle” and a porn model’s definitions for “fluffer” and “balsa boy.”
Positions
500 words
For this column, two sex workers each write a position piece with different perspectives on the same issue. If there's a controversial issue in your community that you have an opinion on, let us know about it. Maybe it'll be the next featured Positions topic!
Letters
Less than 150 words
$pread loves getting mail! We want to know what you think of our magazine. Email us your compliments, criticisms, news, and musings. It's the easiest way to see your words in print!
ARTISTS' GUIDELINES
Please direct all inquiries regarding photography, illustration, and design to Damien Luxe, Art Director. The Art Department welcomes pitches for visual stories, comics, photo essays, and pretty much anything you can think of. Please note that $pread is not a porn magazine and we cannot publish explicit imagery, even illustrations!
