Donating to $pread means supporting the right of sex workers to make their own decisions about their own lives. Mainstream sources often talk about sex work without acknowledging that the majority of sex workers actively choose the work that they do. $pread defends the right to self-determination for workers who choose to work in the sex industry, as well as the right for coerced workers to find a way out of the business. In doing so, the magazine creates a nonjudgmental space that provides support and resources for those who choose to be sex workers, and those who do not.

In addition, supporting $pread means joining in the fight against widespread, harmful stigmatization aimed at sex workers. This stigma actually perpetuates dangerous working conditions in the industry. A productive conversation about labor rights for sex professionals cannot be started or maintained without eradicating moralizing, degrading judgments against industry workers. $pread creates opportunities for the public to hear about sex workers’ experiences from actual sex workers, instead of through the sensationalized, condescending media on which most people rely for information about sex work. $pread plays an integral role in combating stigma by providing balanced, honest views of the industry by sex workers.

Giving to $pread also helps us build community. A progressive sex worker movement can’t be formed without sex workers getting together and sharing opinions, experiences and ideas!
